Roles and Responsibilities of the EMS Officer in the Garments Industry
The duties and responsibilities of the Environmental Officer are as follows:
- Implement environmental practice and management framework (EMF) for the factory.
- To address all environmental issues of the factory including the Chemical management system, ETP & WTP plant.
- To monitor and develop all policies and procedures regarding EMS.
- To improve awareness of Employees and the safety of the plant & personnel as per company and government guidelines
- . To conduct an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and implement an environmental management Plan (EMP).
- To maintain necessary communication with the DoE.
- To be responsible for DoE license & ETP samples.
- To maintain related documents and certifications.
- To manage hazardous chemical waste program including receipt, classification, storage & disposal in compliance with all applicable regulations.
- To create awareness of chemicals-related issues amongst the personnel involved in chemical handling.
- To follow up and develop a chemical management system.
- Assessing safety and environmental issues.
- Ensuring safe working conditions and compliance with health and safety legislation.
- To improve awareness of Employees and the safety of the plant & Review all legal requirements (e.g. BNBC, Factory Act, factory rules, labor law, ECR, government guidelines ).
- Monitor air, water, and noise pollution levels and ensure they remain within legal limits.
- Implement sustainable fabric and raw material sourcing policies.
- Ensure the factory complies with local and international environmental laws, such as ISO 14001 and other sustainability standards.
- Prepare periodic environmental reports for management and regulatory authorities.
- Maintain records of waste generation, energy consumption, and pollution control measures.
Skills and Qualifications of EMS Officer
The academic background should be, graduation or post-graduation in ‘environmental science’. Required skills are Environmental Management, Develop Policy & SOP, Chemical Safety Management, Waste Management, Pollution Control, Sustainable Practices & Certifications, Reporting & Documentation, Energy & Resource Efficiency, etc. These all are Roles and Responsibilities of the EMS Officer in the Garments Industry.
