What is Interlacing, Interlooping, and Intra-looping in Stitch?

Stitch may refer to a method of securing thread into textiles in embroidery and sewing or creating fabrics in knitting. It may also be a method of medical care to close wounds known as sutures or stitches. In garments technology, loop or loops of one or more threads bound with each other either by interlacing or inter-looping or by the combination of these two and performing sewing, then each unit of such configuration is called a stitch. In this article, we explain What are Interlacing, Interlooping, and Intra-looping in Stitch?

In sewing, interlacing, interlooping, and intralooping are terms used to describe how threads interact to form a stitch. These techniques create strong and secure connections between the fabric layers.

Interlacing, Interlooping, and Intra-looping in Stitch

Definitions of Interlacing, Interlooping, and Intra-looping of Stitch are given below:

Interlacing

When one thread passes over another thread to perform sewing, then it is called interlacing. This occurs when a loop of one thread passes over another loop of a different thread. Imagine two threads weaving past each other, with one going above the other’s loop. This method is often used in basic straight stitches on sewing machines.

Interlooping:

When a loop of one thread passes through a loop of another thread to perform sewing, then such binding is called inter-looping. Here, a loop of one thread passes through a loop created by a different thread.

Intra-looping:

When a loop of a thread passes through another loop of the same thread to perform sewing, then the binding is called intra-looping. a loop of thread passing through a loop formed by the same thread itself. It’s like the thread creating its own little knot within the stitch.
