Knit consumption by panel area formula

Fabric weight per garment from the area of each pattern panel, the fabric GSM and a wastage allowance. Works for any knit style.

Formula

W = \dfrac{\sum (L \times B \times q)}{10\,000} \times \text{GSM} \times \left(1 + \dfrac{w}{100}\right)

When to use it

Use it for styles that do not fit the T-shirt body block, such as polo shirts, dresses, leggings or garments with extra panels.

Worked example#

Front 74 × 54 cm, back 76 × 54 cm, two sleeves 24 × 44 cm, 180 GSM, 10% wastage.

Area = 3,996 + 4,104 + 2 × 1,056 = 10,212 cm² = 1.0212 m²
Net weight = 1.0212 × 180 = 183.8 g
With wastage = 183.8 × 1.10 = 202.2 g per garment = 2.43 kg per dozen
