Industrial engineering formula

Line efficiency formula

Earned minutes (good output × SMV) as a percentage of available minutes (manpower × working minutes).

Formula
η=P×SMVM×T×100\eta = \dfrac{P \times \text{SMV}}{M \times T} \times 100

Efficiency % = (output × SMV) / (manpower × working minutes) × 100

SymbolMeaningUnit
PGood outputpcs
SMVGarment SMVmin
MManpower counted in the linepersons
TWorking minutes per personmin

When to use it

Use it daily and hourly to track sewing line performance against plan, and to compare lines working on different styles.

Worked example#

A line of 40 people works 480 minutes and produces 1,000 good T-shirts with an SMV of 12.

  • Earned minutes = 1,000 × 12 = 12,000
  • Available minutes = 40 × 480 = 19,200
  • Efficiency = 12,000 / 19,200 × 100 = 62.5%
