Industrial engineering formula

Standard minute value (SMV) formula

The standard time for an operation or garment in minutes, built from observed time, performance rating and allowances.

Formula
SMV=tobs60×R100×(1+A100)\text{SMV} = \dfrac{t_{obs}}{60} \times \dfrac{R}{100} \times \left(1 + \dfrac{A}{100}\right)

SMV = observed time (s) / 60 × rating / 100 × (1 + allowance / 100)

SymbolMeaningUnit
t_obsAverage observed cycle times
RPerformance rating (100 = standard pace)%
APersonal, fatigue and delay allowance%

When to use it

Use it to set standard times from time study. Garment SMV is the sum of the operation SMVs and drives targets, efficiency, capacity and CM cost.

Worked example#

A side seam operation is timed at an average of 30 seconds. The observer rates the operator at 90% and the factory allowance is 15%.

  • Observed = 30 / 60 = 0.500 min
  • Basic time = 0.500 × 0.90 = 0.450 min
  • SMV = 0.450 × 1.15 = 0.518 min
