Machine Layout Checklist

A pre-start walk-through checklist for a sewing line: operation sequence, machines and attachments, SPI, balance, material flow, quality points, safety and environment, with actions and owners.

What this template does#

The layout checklist is used to walk a sewing line before a new style starts. It covers the operation sequence, machine types and attachments, stitch density, operator allocation, material flow, quality points, safety and working environment. Each item is marked OK, Not OK or N/A, and every Not OK item gets an action and an owner.

A line that starts with the wrong machine, a missing folder or no approved sample loses hours in the first days. This check prevents most of those losses.

When to use it#

  • Before every style change on a line.
  • After a line layout is rearranged.
  • As part of the pre-production meeting follow-up.

How to complete it#

  1. Fill in line, style and the person checking.
  2. Walk the line in operation sequence with the operation breakdown and the line balancing worksheet.
  3. Mark each item. Test attachments on the actual fabric, and check SPI on a sewn sample.
  4. Record actions and owners for Not OK items.
  5. Recheck before the first bundle is issued.

Included check areas#

Area Examples
Sequence Machines in operation order; no backward flow
Machines Correct machine type, needle system, attachments, SPI
Balance Operators allocated from the balance; bottleneck support
Material flow Bundle size, WIP limits, input and output space
Quality Approved sample and measurement chart at the line; inline check points
Safety Needle guards, eye guards, belt covers; broken needle procedure
Environment Lighting, aisles, seating

Edit the list for your products and buyer requirements.

Common mistakes#

  • Checking only machine count and not attachments or SPI.
  • Filling the checklist in the office instead of on the line.
  • Starting production with open Not OK items.
