Fabric & consumption calculator

Hoodie Fabric Consumption Calculator

Estimate fleece or French terry consumption for hoodies and sweatshirts, with hood, kangaroo pocket and rib cuffs and waistband calculated separately, in kg per dozen and grams per piece.

Method note: An estimating method for costing. Confirm with marker consumption for production.

Inputs

Measurement units

Set to 0 for a crew neck sweatshirt.

Set to 0 if there is no kangaroo pocket.

g/m²

Cut width of the rib strip before folding.

g/m²
%

Result

Main fabric per dozen

8.213kg/dz

Rib fabric per dozen
0.602kg/dz
Main fabric per piece
684.4g
Rib per piece
50.2g

Book main and rib fabric separately, each with its own buffer.

Working
  1. Body and sleeves = 583.3 g
  2. Hood = 76 g
  3. Pocket = 25.1 g
  4. Main fabric = 684.4 g per piece (wastage included) = 8.213 kg/dz

Formula

Formula
Wmain=[Abody+Ahood+Apocket]×GSM10 000×(1+w100)W_{main} = \left[A_{body} + A_{hood} + A_{pocket}\right] \times \dfrac{\text{GSM}}{10\,000} \times \left(1 + \dfrac{w}{100}\right)

Main fabric grams = (body area + hood area + pocket area) × GSM / 10,000 × (1 + wastage / 100)

How the calculator works#

The body and sleeves use the same body block method as the T-shirt calculator. The hood is added as two side panels (height × width plus seam allowance), and the kangaroo pocket as one panel. All of these use the main fabric GSM. The rib for cuffs and waistband uses its own length, width and GSM. Wastage is added to both.

Worked example#

Defaults: body 70 cm, sleeve 62 cm, half chest 58 cm, allowances 8 cm and 4 cm, hood 36 × 26 cm, pocket 22 × 34 cm, 300 GSM main fabric, rib 100 × 16 cm in 280 GSM, 12% wastage.

  • Body and sleeves = 583.3 g; hood = 76 g; pocket = 25.1 g (all with wastage)
  • Main fabric = 684.4 g per piece = 8.213 kg/dz
  • Rib = 50.2 g per piece = 0.602 kg/dz

Interpreting the result#

Book and cost the main fabric and rib separately. Heavy fleece often shrinks in length, so check bulk shrinkage and adjust patterns before relying on the estimate. After the first cut, compare the fabric used with the booked consumption.

Assumptions

  • The body block method treats body and sleeves as one rectangle per side, as for T-shirts.
  • A two-piece hood is assumed. Three-piece hoods with a centre panel need the panel method.
  • Rib is costed on its own GSM because it is a different fabric.

Common errors

  • Costing rib at the body fabric GSM or price.
  • Forgetting the hood lining for double-layer hoods. Add it as a second hood or use the knit panel calculator.
  • Using unbrushed GSM for fleece that will be brushed and lose some weight, or the opposite.

Questions

Can I use it for a crew neck sweatshirt?

Yes. Set the hood height to 0. Set the pocket length to 0 if there is no pocket.

Why is rib calculated separately?

Rib is a different fabric with its own GSM and price, and it is booked separately from the body fabric.

Does the main fabric result include the hood lining?

No. The hood is calculated as two side panels in the main fabric. Add a lined hood as extra hood area, or calculate lining separately.
