Fabric Inspection Sheet (Four-Point System)

A roll-by-roll four-point inspection record: shade lot, cuttable width, length inspected, defects in each point class, total points, points per 100 square yards and accept or reject against the buyer's limit.

What this template does#

The inspection sheet applies the four-point system roll by roll. You record the number of defects in each point class; the sheet calculates total points and points per 100 square yards from the inspected length and cuttable width, then compares the result with the acceptance limit.

When to use it#

  • On receipt of every fabric lot, for the rolls in the inspection sample.
  • For supplier performance reviews.
  • Before cutting, so defective rolls can be held or cut with care.

How to complete it#

  1. Enter supplier, fabric and the acceptance limit from the buyer's requirement. The example value in the template is not a standard.
  2. For each roll, record roll number, shade or lot, cuttable width (inches) and length inspected (yards).
  3. Count defects by point class as you inspect. Remember the common rules: no more than 4 points in any one yard, and continuous defects score 4 points per yard.
  4. Read the result per roll, and note the main defect types.
  5. Record shade, width and bow or skew separately where needed; they are not part of the point score.

Metric fabrics#

If you measure in meters and centimeters, convert to yards and inches, or change the formula to points per 100 square meters: total points × 10,000 / (meters × width in cm).

Common mistakes#

  • Using full width instead of cuttable width.
  • Entering defect points instead of defect counts in the point class columns.
  • Using one buyer's limit for another buyer's fabric.
