Fabric Shrinkage Test Sheet

A record for in-house shrinkage tests: length and width before and after washing for each specimen, dimensional change percentages and a pass or fail result against your specification limits.

What this template does#

The shrinkage test sheet records in-house dimensional change tests on fabric specimens. For each specimen, you enter benchmark distances in length and width before and after the wash procedure. The sheet calculates the percentage change and gives a pass or fail result against your limits.

When to use it#

  • On every bulk fabric lot before cutting.
  • When comparing finishing options with the fabric supplier.
  • To set pattern allowances for washed garments.

How to complete it#

  1. Enter the test method (the wash and dry procedure you follow) and the limits from your buyer's specification.
  2. Cut and condition specimens as the method requires, and mark benchmarks.
  3. Measure before washing and record length and width.
  4. Wash, dry and condition as specified, then measure again.
  5. Read the results. Negative values are shrinkage; positive values are growth.

Notes#

  • In-house tests are for control and early warning. For buyer approval, use an accredited laboratory where the buyer requires it.
  • Test several specimens per lot, from different rolls.
  • Record the result by roll so you can separate rolls that behave differently.

Common mistakes#

  • Using a gentler wash than the buyer's method.
  • Measuring before the fabric has conditioned.
  • Entering limits as positive numbers. Shrinkage limits are negative (for example -5).
